Both modes can be switched on at any level of difficulty. At the same time, enemy hits do more damage.

Here it is much more difficult to beat your way up the rankings – a common point of criticism from series fans of the reboot – and you have a much smaller time window for parades. The same applies to the hardcore mode, in which Ninja Theory took the first part of Devil May Cry as a model.

You have to use the combat system in all its facets and you have your hands full with it. Anyone who has previously been resentful of the game because of its more accessible level of difficulty will find perfect proof here that the fast combat system also works at a higher level. My favorite is the must-style mode, in which the opponents are not damaged until Dante has fought his way up to an S rank. When it comes to content innovations, there is also reason to be happy – especially if you have the ambition to beat yourself up rankings and show the world and the developers what you are made of. Fox News-style propaganda television and bewitched energy drinks make it possible. Almost on the side, Dante’s mysterious past is explored and a demon conspiracy uncovered that has been busy administering de facto world domination for a while. That doesn’t quite reach the heights of the third part, but it definitely works and allows a lot of creativity in the arenas. One of the most spectacular bosses in the recent past.Īll in all, of course, everything stays the same: fast-paced, elegant sword, ax and scythe fight, juggling a bit of enemies with pistols in the air so as not to let the combo tear off. In addition to a slight visual overhaul, the British submitted a handful of new and particularly hard game modes. Fortunately, Ninja Theory does not rest on the fact that the title has aged excellently.

For the “Definitive Edition” label, a lot had to happen, because you already know what to expect from a purely graphic point of view. Once you’ve gotten used to the fact that the Japanese over-the-top, almost invulnerable Gothic cowboy has turned into an arrogant emo f**t (who then does a lot to ensure that you still stand on his side), DmC is a fast and creative slasher, with a winning level design and some of the most exciting bosses of the last (and this) generation. As a result, the game looks great and, thanks to the fast response times, feels in top form on the PS4. Of course, 1080p60 is the standard here as well, we are used to that from the rest of the wave of HD remasters that are just sloshing in on us.

The “Definitive Edition”? I thought I played that on PC in early 2013? In 1080p and with almost 200 frames per second? Well, Ninja Theory has once again taken on the controversial reboot of Capcom’s Slasher series and has not only adapted the technology to the “new” consoles. Ninja Theory takes its best game to its chest for the third time and creates a tough ultra-turbo edition of the Slasher. DmC: Devil May Cry – Definitive Edition – Test
